On June 24, 2021, a tragic incident occurred in Oltepesi, Kajiado West, when a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) helicopter crash landed during training, resulting in the loss of 10 lives and injuring 13 others.

The Mi 171E helicopter crash landed around 9am, according to a statement by KDF Spokesperson Zipporah Kioko.

Those who were injured were taken to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi, while the bodies of the 10 soldiers who died were moved to Nairobi for further processing.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with aircraft accident investigators arriving at the scene to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Residents of the area have reported that the helicopter circled in the air for over 20 minutes before crashing, with those on board scrambling to jump out.
