On June 24, 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially launched the Safari Rally Kenya, a historic moment for the country's motorsport scene.
The Safari Rally last featured on the World Rally Championship calendar in 2002, but after years of lobbying, Kenya finally secured a spot on the global calendar.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was joined by FIA president Jean Todt, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, and WRC Safari Rally CEO Phineas Kimathi for the flag-off ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
Local speed-star Onkar Rai, co-driven by Drew Sturrock, was the first to take off the ramp, followed closely by multiple national rally champions Carl 'Flash' Tundo, co-driven by Tim Jessop.
The WRC Special Stage was expected to start at 2 pm, with a face-to-face showdown between Onkar and Carl at Kasarani.
