On June 22, 2021, Susan Wangari's husband, Daniel Gucoma, 36, was waiting for her at the intersection of Thika superhighway and the Eastern-Northern bypass at Kamakis near Ruiru, Kiambu County.

However, due to heavy traffic on the superhighway, Daniel decided not to wait for Susan, who was traveling in a matatu from Nairobi's CBD.

As fate would have it, the matatu broke down at the exact same spot where Daniel had been waiting for Susan, potentially saving her life.

According to Susan, Daniel had called her at 2:29 pm, asking her to send him some documents via WhatsApp messenger, as he was getting late for a business meeting in Thika.

It was the last call she would receive from her husband.

‘He felt he could not wait for me any longer as he was getting late for the business in Thika. We agreed that I should share details of the vehicle he wanted to sell and the Tim account details via WhatsApp,’ Susan told the Daily Nation.

However, Susan received a call from her friend a few minutes later, informing her that Daniel had been involved in an accident at Gwa-Kairu area near Spur Mall.

She boarded another vehicle to the scene, only to find Daniel had been moved to Thika Level Five Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was later moved to General Kago Funeral Home while the car was towed to Juja Police Station.

Police suspect the killers abandoned the motorbike they used in the drive-by shooting.

At Juja police station, Daniel's car, a white Subaru Forester registration number KDC 010H, had nine bullet holes on the driver's door, which police sources said were fired at close range.
