On June 24, 2021, the World Bank approved a $292 million fund for infrastructure projects in Zanzibar, marking a significant development in the country's infrastructure growth.

The funding will enable Zanzibar residents to benefit from reliable and affordable electricity, as well as modern water and transport infrastructure.

Notably, this is in addition to the $4.9 billion the World Bank had already approved to support mega projects in the country.

The government had previously relied on its internal resources to implement key development projects following a decision by foreign donors to withhold funds in 2021.

The donors had withheld funding due to allegations of human rights violations and repressive government policies during John Magufuli's reign.
