On June 22, 2021, a devastating airstrike hit a market in the town of Togoga, northern Tigray, killing at least 50 people and injuring as many as 400.

According to eyewitnesses, the Ethiopian Air Force carried out the attack, which has sparked widespread condemnation.

The Ethiopian Federal government has yet to comment on the strike, leaving many to question the motives behind the attack.

Adding to the tragedy, the Ethiopian army blocked ambulances from reaching the victims, including those from the Red Cross, citing checkpoints and detaining medical teams.

"Several people have died because they couldn't immediately get medical treatment," an eyewitness recounted.

"Not far from where I live, Seven out of the total eight members of a family instantly died when airstrike hits their house," the eyewitness added.

The airstrikes come at a critical time, with vote-counting underway following elections that took place without polling in the Tigray region and other parts of the country.

It is the first time Prime Minister Abiy has faced voters since ascending to power in 2018.
