Published on June 30, 2019, Michael Olunga, the Kenyan striker, has taken the lead in the Golden Boot race at the African Cup of Nations.

On June 27, Olunga scored two goals against Tanzania, including a magnificent overhead kick, to become the tournament's joint top scorer.

He is now tied with Uganda's Emmanuel Okwi, who also scored two goals against DR Congo and Zimbabwe, and Benin's Mickael Pote, who has two goals as well.

Initially, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were tipped to be in the running for the Golden Boot, but they have had a relatively low-key tournament so far.

Olunga will have a chance to add to his tally when Kenya takes on Senegal in their final group C match on July 1 at the Air Defense stadium in Cairo.

It remains to be seen who will be collecting the Golden Boot at the end of the competition, a prize that has been won by notable players in the past, including Rashidi Yekini, Patrick Mboma, and Samuel Eto'o.
