On June 23rd, Mathare United made a significant statement in the FKF Premier League, defeating AFC Leopards 1-0 at Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi. The win marked their second victory of the season, and it was a much-needed boost for the struggling team.
John Mwangi scored the only goal of the match, finding the back of the net just minutes before halftime. The goal handed Mathare a huge victory, and they held onto their lead throughout the match, despite creating numerous chances.
Mathare's win was their second of the season, following a 1-0 victory over Nzoia Sugar on February 8th. However, despite the win, they remain at the bottom of the log with 11 points, four adrift from the safety zone.
Meanwhile, AFC Leopards suffered a setback, dropping to fourth place with 37 points from 20 games.
Elsewhere in the league, Gor Mahia were held to a 0-0 draw by Wazito FC at Thika Sub-County Stadium. The draw was a setback for Gor, who were forced to make a substitution in the seventh minute due to an injury to midfielder Alpha Onyango.
With the draw, Gor Mahia climbed to third spot with 38 points from 20 games, while Wazito remained in 10th position with 27 points from 19 matches.
Tusker FC, on the other hand, reclaimed the top spot in the league, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Western Stima. Henry Meja and Boniface Muchiri scored the goals for Tusker, who now top the log with 44 points, two above second-placed KCB FC.
