On June 22, 2021, an American citizen, John Marsh, was found dead in his hotel room at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Marsh was a member of the Carter Center team of observers, who had traveled to Ethiopia to monitor the country's sixth general election.
According to the Addis Ababa Police Commission, Marsh's body was discovered by a hotel room cleaner, who had reported the incident to the police.
Police said that a postmortem would be carried out to determine the cause of death, and an investigation was underway in collaboration with the Federal Police Commission and the US Embassy in Addis Ababa.
Initial reports suggested that Marsh may have died from an illness, with police finding medicines at the scene and noting that the body did not have any visible injuries.
The Carter Center sent a condolence message to Marsh's family and friends on Twitter.
