On June 21, 2021, the European Union (EU) announced plans to lift sanctions against Burundi, which had been in place since March 2016.
EU Ambassador to Burundi Claude Bochu stated that the decision was made after Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye initiated positive progress in promoting governance, rule of law, and human rights.
According to Bochu, the EU is expecting more positive results from the Burundian government before the sanctions are officially lifted.
The EU has also announced plans to finance the rehabilitation of the Port of Bujumbura and its surroundings, as well as contribute funds to the farming sector.
