As of June 23, 2021, Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has given property owners in the capital city two months to repaint their buildings, or face a daily fine of Sh1,500 for non-compliance.
The directive comes after a one-year extension granted to property owners last year expired. The extension was granted due to economic hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to many businesses laying off staff.
NMS Director General Major General Mohamed Badi explained that the grace period was granted to allow businesses to recover and repaint their buildings when their businesses pick up.
According to the Public Health Act Cap 242, property owners within the city are required to repaint their buildings after every two years. The Act states that any person guilty of an offence under, or default in complying with, any provision of these Rules shall be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh1,500 for every day during which the contravention continues.
Mr. Badi noted that a number of buildings owned by private entities have been voluntarily repainted, and all government-owned buildings in the city have also been repainted after every ministry was tasked to repaint their properties.
