On 21 June 2021, President Uhuru Kenyatta and European Council President Charles Michel met in Brussels to launch the strategic dialogue framework, marking a significant upgrade in Kenya-EU relations.
The framework, which builds on the meeting between the two leaders on 9 March 2021 at State House, Nairobi, and the renewed European Union Strategy for the Horn of Africa adopted in May 2021, recognizes Kenya's potential in enhancing regional stability and promoting peace and security.
Through the new bilateral framework, Kenya and the EU will cooperate more closely in areas such as democracy, governance, and human rights, as well as gender equality, peace and security, trade and investment, social development, climate change, and digital technologies.
The framework will be implemented over time, guided by a roadmap to be developed by relevant entities of the Kenyan Government and the European Union.
President Kenyatta, who was accompanied to the meeting by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo, Adan Mohamed, and Betty Maina, is in Belgium on a two-day Official Visit.
