Published on June 22, 2021, a tragic incident shook Athi village in Juja, Kiambu County, when a 38-year-old man was killed by hyenas while he was drunk.

The wild animals attacked the man, leaving behind only his dry bones, and the residents are still in shock.

Locals have expressed their outrage, pointing to the high uptake of illicit liquor in the area as the cause of the tragedy.

‘The hyenas would not have attacked the man were it not for the alcohol he had consumed. We have been protesting against the menace to no avail. It’s sad that the government seems not to listen to our cries,’ said a local.

Residents have been calling for the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to capture the wild animals, including leopards and hyenas, that have been attacking their livestock at night.
