On June 21, 2021, a devastating incident occurred at the Kangemi Bridge in Westlands, Nairobi, where the walls of the flyover under construction collapsed, trapping several people.
According to the Kenya National Highways Authority, all workers at the scene have been accounted for, with one person injured during the collapse admitted to hospital in stable condition.
KeNHA, in a statement, said two other workers survived the accident with minor injuries.
Several people were rescued, while others were left trapped as the soil on the back collapsed, causing the bridge to come down and trapping traders nearby.
Witnesses reported that two people were rushed to Eagle Nursing Home Medical and Health in Westlands, but the excavators remained at the scene, leaving uncertainty about the number of people still trapped.
The incident caused a massive traffic snarl-up along Waiyaki Way in Westlands.
