On June 21, DPP Noordin Haji expressed his disappointment over the lack of progress in the investigation into the murder of Kenei, a former personal assistant to Deputy President William Ruto.
According to Haji, he has yet to receive an investigation file to either approve charges or order a deeper probe, indicating that the investigation had gone cold or hit a dead end.
Despite assurance from DCI George Kinoti that detectives had established a cover-up meant to mislead the police into ruling Kenei's death as a suicide, Haji's comments suggest that the investigation has stalled.
As reported earlier, detectives led by those from the Homicide and Serious Crimes Unit had identified nine persons of interest in connection with Kenei's murder.
However, Head of Homicide Unit Martin Nyuguto declined to reveal details of those targeted, leaving many questions unanswered.
It was also established that the DP's bodyguard was poisoned before he was shot in the head, and an independent probe was supposed to vindicate the homicide detectives and bring those behind the murder to justice.
On Monday, one of the deputy president's bodyguards, Nicholas Maiyo, testified against former Sports CS Rashid Echesa, who was arrested in 2020 over a Sh39.5 million fake arms deal.
Echesa was accompanied by two white men during the suspicious visit to the DP's office, and Maiyo informed him that Ruto was heading to Kandara, not a public function in Murang'a as Echesa had claimed.
