On June 21, 2021, a section of the Nairobi Expressway flyover bridge collapsed at Kangemi in westlands, Nairobi, trapping several people under debris.

The 27.1-kilometre expressway, constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), is a continuous JKIA expressway construction project.

Four people were rescued while numerous others were reportedly caught up in the debris.

The expressway, which will connect the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, is already 15 percent complete.

According to reports, the contractor has installed over 69 pillars and earthworks along the stretch.

The collapsed bridge is part of the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which aims to improve traffic flow in the city.
