June 21, 2021, Copenhagen (AFP) - Denmark's players celebrate their 4-1 win over Russia in the Euro 2020 group stage match at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
Denmark made a stunning comeback to secure a spot in the last 16 of Euro 2020 with a 4-1 win over Russia, finishing second in Group B.
The Danes, who had no points from their first two matches, needed a win over Russia by two goals or more and a defeat for Finland to guarantee their passage from the group as the second-placed team.
Denmark's Mikkel Damsgaard scored a brilliant opening goal in the 38th minute, curling a strike that whipped past Matvei Safonov and caused an eruption in the stands.
Denmark continued to press after the restart, and their second came in almost comical circumstances on the hour mark when Yussuf Poulsen scored after Daler Kuzyaev's miscued back-pass rolled straight to him in front of the Russian goal.
Denmark's third goal came in the 79th minute when Andreas Christensen rammed home a superb long-range strike, and their fourth goal came three minutes later when Joakim Maehle slotted home.
Denmark's coach, Kasper Hjulmand, praised the 'amazing' team spirit and friendship after revelling in the on-pitch celebrations.
Maehle said, 'I've never experienced anything like this. The atmosphere gets better every time we are here at Parken.'
