On Monday, a section of the Nairobi Expressway under construction in Kangemi area collapsed, leaving several people trapped in the debris.
According to reports, four people were rescued from the site, while others were still trapped. The incident occurred in the late afternoon.
The Nairobi Expressway, a 27.1-kilometre road being constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), is part of the ongoing JKIA expressway construction project.
The expressway, which will link the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, is already 15 percent complete. The contractor has installed over 69 pillars and earthworks along the stretch.
Reports indicate that the road will have a flatbed section from Mlolongo to NextGen Mall, covering 18.2 kilometres, and an elevated section from NextGen Mall to St Marks church, covering 8.2 kilometres.
The Nairobi expressway will include a four-lane and six-lane dual carriageway within the existing median of Mombasa Road/Uhuru Highway/Waiyaki Way and 10 interchanges.
According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the CRBC will be granted a concession to operate and run the expressway for 30 years, including a construction period of three years and an operation and maintenance period of 27 years.
