Stephen Mwangi Muriithi, a former Deputy Director of Intelligence, has died at the age of 84, leaving behind an unresolved lawsuit against former President Daniel Moi.

Muriithi, who sued Moi in 2011 for unlawful detention and occasioning his financial loss, had been seeking close to Sh2 billion in compensation.

According to his lawyer, Paul Mwangi, Muriithi's instructions before dying were that he proceeds with the appeal, which was set to be heard on July 22.

However, with Muriithi's passing, the case has been left unresolved, with Moi having died on the day the case was slated for hearing in the Supreme Court.

Muriithi's lawsuit had been a long and contentious one, with the High Court initially ruling in his favor in 2011, only for the Court of Appeal to set aside the decision in 2014, citing that Moi was not personally responsible for Muriithi's detention.

The appellate court also ruled that Muriithi failed to prove the losses he claimed to have suffered while in detention.

Despite the setbacks, Muriithi continued to pursue his case, applying for certification before the Court of Appeal and later moving directly to the Supreme Court.
