Published on June 21, 2021, Nairobi News reported that Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, a former Starehe lawmaker, expects Central Kenya to support Deputy President William Ruto in the 2022 general elections.
Wanjiru, who has confirmed her candidacy for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket, suggested that President Uhuru Kenyatta's recent political moves have confused his supporters from the region.
Speaking to Nairobi News at the weekend, Wanjiru expressed her disappointment with the President's leadership, stating, "As a leader, you pass on your leadership to safe hands so they can take care of the people. Being from the Mount Kenya region, we are disappointed the president is not giving us indicators of leaving us in a safe pair of hands."
She further claimed that President Kenyatta has frustrated leaders who appear popular in Central Kenya, saying, "Instead, what he (the President) has done is to scatter all our leaders who have influence (in the region), and anybody who looks like he or she is doing well (politically) which is unacceptable."
Wanjiru added that the retiring Head of State is free to support anyone he wishes to succeed him, but emphasized that Kenyans will decide who will be president in the 2022 elections, stating, "It is his democratic right to support whoever he wants to support but Kenyans will decide who will be president, citizens will vote for the leaders they want. For us, we know who is our presidential candidate, William Ruto, who we will go all out to ensure that he wins elections."
