On June 21, 2021, Kisii County government sounded the alarm over the theft of streetlights within the county, calling on residents to secure them from vandals.
County Chief Officer in charge of Market Management and Development Mengo Ochwangi expressed concern that the county government installs lights to improve security and cannot protect them in villages.
Speaking to the press in Kisii town, Ochwangi said, "The solar lights have been installed to improve security and provide light for business activities but they are being stolen. I would like to advise residents of areas in which lights have been installed to take responsibility of ensuring they are secure."
Ochwangi warned that the county government will not budget for new solar lights if residents fail to assure their safety.
He also addressed concerns over delayed response to emergencies by the county fire engine, saying, "The county is very big. You may find the vehicle was in Nyacheki and it will take time to arrive at Nyakoe to respond to an emergency."
Residents had complained about delayed response to emergencies and darkness in several places caused by lack of streetlights.
