On June 19, 2021, one of Uganda's Tokyo 2020 Olympic squad members tested positive for the new coronavirus upon arrival in Japan, marking the first confirmed case in an overseas team.

The individual, who had received two shots of AstraZeneca's vaccine and had tested negative 72 hours before departing for Japan, is now staying at a government-designated facility.

The rest of the team, consisting of nine athletes and coaches, traveled on to their host city in Osaka, where they will hold their training camp.

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Games, which were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are set to start on July 23, 2021, amidst concerns about the spread of the virus.

Organisers are considering allowing domestic spectators into the stadiums for the Games, with a cap of 10,000 people per venue being eyed, despite government health experts warning against in-person audiences.
