June 30, 2019, marks the deadline for Kenyan employees to file their income tax returns with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

By June 27, nearly a third of Kenyans had not filed their tax returns, putting 1.3 million non-compliant individuals and companies at risk of fines.

Only 2.7 million Kenyans had filed their tax returns by June 23, against a target of four million taxpayers.

Additionally, Kenyans have until midnight to file their returns.

Other important dates to note include:

  • August 31, 2019: The old generation passports will be invalidated and cease to be recognized as valid travel documents. Approximately 1.5 million Kenyans with the old generation passports have not yet applied for the new e-passports.
  • October 1, 2019: The old generation Sh1,000 banknote will cease to be a legal tender, and Kenyans must exchange it for the new one.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has introduced new banknotes with enhanced security features to combat illicit financial flows and counterfeit currency.
