On June 17, 2021, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja made a surprising revelation about his university days, claiming that profits from a kinyozi (barbershop) and a laundry business enabled him to acquire properties at a young age.
According to Sakaja, he earned at least Ksh5,000 daily from these ventures, which he used to buy a Mercedes Benz car and an apartment at Yaya Centre during his fourth year at the University of Nairobi.
However, some netizens have questioned the feasibility of Sakaja's claims, arguing that saving Ksh5,000 daily for four years would not have been enough to purchase the items he acquired.
But Sakaja's story also raises questions about his connections to influential politicians, including his alleged mentorship by veteran trade unionist Francis Atwoli and his interactions with politicians in the Mwai Kibaki administration.
