On June 17, 2021, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja made a claim that left many scratching their heads. He said that profits from a kinyozi (barbershop) and a laundry business enabled him to acquire properties at a young age.
According to Sakaja, he earned at least Ksh5,000 every day, which he used to buy a Mercedes Benz car and an apartment at Yaya Centre during his fourth year at the University of Nairobi.
However, some netizens questioned the feasibility of Sakaja's claim, pointing out that saving Ksh5,000 daily for four years would not have been enough to purchase the mentioned items.
But there's another side to the story. Sakaja was a student leader at the University of Nairobi and had connections with influential politicians in the Mwai Kibaki administration. It's also alleged that veteran trade unionist Francis Atwoli had been mentoring Sakaja from an early age.
Now, the question remains: where did Sakaja get his money from?
