On May 15th, Deputy President William Ruto unleashed a scathing Twitter rant against President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of betraying the trust of Kenyans who elected him to lead the country.
According to a report published by the Star newspaper, President Kenyatta had promised to support one of the opposition's National Super Alliance (Nasa) co-principals in the next presidential election.
Speaking to leaders from the Ukambani region, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, President Kenyatta asked Nasa bosses to decide who they wanted him to back.
“Steve (Kalonzo), listen to your people and what they are saying. Unite in Nasa then we shall see what will happen. Whatever you will agree on is what I will go with,” he said.
Deputy President Ruto responded by calling President Kenyatta a 'disgrace' to the 8 million Kenyans who elected him to lead the country.
He accused President Kenyatta of promoting tribalism and killing the Jubilee dream of uniting the country.
“So, was the destruction/dismembering of Jubilee, a national party, meant to pave way for support of regional/tribal parties in Nasa? Now, with the collapse of Jubilee, isn’t it fair for those who can’t fit in ethnic parties to build UDA as an alternative national party?” he posed to his fan base.
