From Beach Boy to International Tourist: Seif Matano's Journey ¶
Published on June 15, 2021
Seif Matano, a 42-year-old Diani beach operator, has had a life-changing journey. Born and raised in Kenya, Matano was once a 'beach boy,' operating on the white sandy beaches of Diani in Kwale County. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he met a British tourist who would change his destiny forever.
Matano's story began on a sunny afternoon when he was busy convincing clients to board a marine boat at the beach. A friend pointed out a foreign lady resting on a beach bed, and Matano's curiosity got the better of him. He approached the woman, and what followed was a conversation that would turn his life around.
Matano and the tourist, who later became his wife, Mariam Seif, kept in touch after she returned to England. Two years later, she proposed that they move to London, but Matano, a Muslim, suggested they get married first. They did, and Mariam even converted to Islam, calling herself Mariam Seif.
Since then, the couple has been visiting Kenya twice a year, spending their time in their favorite four-star hotel around Diani. Matano's wife had to learn to cook Kenyan food, and she can now cook chapati, ugali, sukumawiki, and pilau.
Matano has invested in Kenya, owning a glass boat that employs his friends who used to work with him at the beach. He believes that the title 'beach boy' for those operating on the beach tarnishes their image, as there are many who run genuine businesses there.
Matano now lives in Pittsburgh with his wife, where he sells men's clothes. He still retains the business he was running in Kenya, a glass boat that is operated by his friends.
