Former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo's life was cut short on June 14, 2021, at Nairobi Hospital, leaving his family and loved ones in shock.
According to his brother George Midiwo, Jakoyo had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on June 13, 2021, after being taken ill at the hospital with low blood pressure.
Despite showing signs of improvement, Jakoyo's condition took a turn for the worse, and he passed away the following day at around 4 pm.
George revealed that Jakoyo had been diagnosed with acute kidney failure prior to his hospitalization and that doctors were still trying to determine the cause of his condition.
Before his hospitalization, Jakoyo had traveled from his Siaya home to Nairobi to celebrate his children's academic achievements, including his daughter's graduation from a South African university and his son's outstanding performance in the 2020 KCSE exam.
Just two weeks prior to Jakoyo's death, the Midiwo family had suffered a double tragedy, losing four members, including Jakoyo's elder sister Julia, his grandmother, and a maternal uncle.
ODM leader Raila Odinga had previously warned Jakoyo about attending burials during the COVID-19 pandemic, a warning that Jakoyo had heeded.
ODM mourned Jakoyo as a gallant son of the soil and a defender of the party who never shied away from speaking the truth.
"A founder member of the Change Movement and a three-time Member of Parliament for Gem Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo. He was a defender of the party and never shied away from speaking the truth," ODM wrote.
