On May 27, 2021, the road formerly known as DikDik Road was renamed Francis Atwoli road in a ceremony attended by Nairobi Deputy Governor Ann Kananu and other leaders.
However, the road sign board bearing Atwoli's name was not spared from controversy. A section of Kenyans on social media argued that the COTU boss has done nothing for workers he represents to warrant a road named after him.
City Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi was among those who wanted the sign board brought down, even going as far as promising to foot legal expenses for activist Boniface Mwangi if he brought it down and got arrested.
Despite the backlash, Atwoli ensured the signboard was reinstated and dared those who wanted to bring it down again to do so.
He tweeted, 'The Nairobi County Government has reinstalled the sign. If you think you came from the moon go try to remove it again. Also, a CCTV has been installed for the security of the area.'
However, the sign board was not spared from vandals. Images accessed by K24 Digital show the signboard up in flames after unknown people used car tyres to set it ablaze.
It appears that the sign board was burnt at night since it was still there at the end of the day on Monday.
