On June 14, 2021, the news of the passing of Jakoyo Midiwo, a former Member of Parliament for Gem, sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Kenya.
Philip Etale, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Communications Director, confirmed the news in a message seeking goodwill from the public.
“Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo has rested. Please pray for the family during this difficult moment,” Etale posted on Monday.
Midiwo, who was also a cousin to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, served as the deputy Minority Leader in the 11th Parliament.
The ODM party eulogized Midiwo, describing him as a “gallant son of the soil, a founder member of the Change Movement and a three time Member of Parliament for Gem.”
They also acknowledged his role as a defender of the party and his willingness to speak the truth.
As the news of his passing spread, others in the political sphere took to social media to mourn the loss of the former MP.
