Algeria's parliamentary election is underway, with millions of citizens casting their votes on Saturday. The election comes amid calls for a boycott by the opposition Hirak Protest movement.
According to reports, about 24 million Algerians have been urged to elect 406 deputies of the National People's Assembly, who will serve for a five-year term. The voters will have to choose among 13,000 candidates, with half of them listed as independent.
President Tebboune has stated that the vote is aimed at addressing corruption and establishing a 'new Algeria'. However, the Hirak Protest movement has condemned the crackdown by Algerian authorities and called for an overhaul of the political system.
Three key Hirak icons, Karim Tabbou, Ihsane El-Kadi, and journalist Khaled Darren, were arrested on Thursday but were later freed on Friday evening. The arrest prompted an international outcry over democracy in the country.
The preliminary results of the polls are expected to be made public on Sunday.
