On June 12, 2021, Treasury CS Ukur Yatani made significant cuts to the car budgets of several high-ranking government officials, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
According to the law, Odinga is entitled to two saloon cars with an engine capacity of less than 2000cc and one 4x4 vehicle not exceeding 3000cc. All three cars are replaceable every four years.
However, Yatani has allocated only Sh6.8 million for the routine maintenance of Odinga's current fleet of vehicles, a significant reduction from the previous allocation.
Deputy President William Ruto, on the other hand, was spared in the budget cuts, having been targeted by state operatives in previous years.
The wives of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, Margaret Kenyatta and Rachel Ruto, respectively, are also entitled to budget allocations directed through their own offices. Margaret Kenyatta's office will receive Sh253 million, while Rachel Ruto's office was allocated Sh235 million.
Retired President Mwai Kibaki will receive Sh98 million, a cut from the previous year's allocation of Sh113 million. President Kenyatta is also expected to be included in future packages for retired presidents, with a new vote expected to be Sh72 million in 2022.
A retired president's once-a-month pension is set at 80 percent of his pensionable salary, which is equivalent to 60 percent of Sh1.44 million monthly pay offered to the sitting president.
