On June 12, 2021, a dramatic scene unfolded at Bikeke police station in Trans Nzoia County as irate residents marched to the station demanding the arrest of an officer accused of cohabiting with a schoolgirl.
The officer, who had been transferred to the station from Kiminini, was allegedly in a relationship with a Form Three student from Milele Secondary School since the long Covid-19 holiday.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer's frequent visitor, the schoolgirl, was often seen at the police officers' quarter, a few meters from the station.
Residents, numbering over two hundred, stormed the police station, forcing their way in and demanding the officer's arrest.
"We found him with the girl in the house and he told us that the girl was over 18 years old and we want to know the truth," said one of the angry residents.
However, the schoolgirl's mother later produced an age assessment form claiming that her daughter was above 18 years old, but the irate mob dismissed her statement, accusing her of being compromised by the officer due to her poverty.
Police intervened, dispersing the crowd, who had begun threatening to burn down the police station.
"The matter has been taken by relevant authorities and is being investigated," said a police officer, who declined to be quoted due to lack of authorization to speak to the media.
