On June 12, 2021, police in Matete Sub-county were investigating a theft case at Kivaywa High School, where a television set had been stolen from the dining hall.

Three security guards, Edward Malala, Henry Khaoya, and Evans Wanyonyi, were booked at Matete Police Station as prime suspects in the theft.

However, the guards were not being investigated for the theft, but rather for their alleged involvement in the murder of four of their colleagues by unknown assailants.

Two of the guards, Situma Sitikho and Lucas Wanjala, survived the attack, with Sitikho fighting for his life at Webuye County Referral Hospital and Wanjala escaping unhurt.

Matete Sub-county Police Commander, Thomas Ototo, dismissed the connection between the murders and the theft, terming the killings 'a normal crime.'

Despite this, Ototo assured the public that police had crucial leads and would bring the culprits to book.

Kakamega County Commissioner Pauline Dola confirmed that police had been deployed to man the school as investigations continue.
