On June 11, 2021, leaders from West Pokot County expressed their discontent with the decision by school heads to expel students due to unpaid fees, resulting in a surge of children roaming the streets of major towns.
According to Masol nominated MCA Grace Rengei, the move has led to an alarming increase in cases of children being sexually assaulted by sex offenders in areas like Makutano, Kapenguria, and Chepareria.
"These children, especially girls, are seen loitering the streets of major towns in our county, with many of them being sexually assaulted by sex perverts," Rengei stated.
She urged the relevant authorities to explore alternative methods to collect fees from parents, rather than sending students home.
"Many schools in this area are girl schools, and the idea of sending them to collect fees a few days after they were on half-term is tantamount to allowing them to engage in bad behaviors," Rengei added.
