On June 1, a devastating road accident occurred at Lwandeti on the Webuye-Eldoret highway, claiming the lives of seven people.

The accident involved a trailer, a matatu, and a motorcyclist, with the rider attempting to overtake the Webuye-bound trailer despite the approaching passenger vehicle from the opposite direction.

Among the deceased were the rider and his two passengers, as well as four passengers traveling in the ill-fated matatu.

Six other passengers on the 11-seater matatu sustained severe injuries and were taken to Webuye Hospital in Bungoma County.

According to Kakamega county commander Bernard Muli, the speeding rider was involved in a head-on collision with the matatu, whose driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the trailer just moments after midnight.

"The speeding rider was involved in a head-on collision with the matatu whose driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the trailer just moments after 12am," said the police commander.

"It is a chilling incident. We urge motorists, especially motorcyclists, to be careful when on the busy highway," added Muli.

On the same day, another accident occurred in Webuye, where seven people died, and the matatu driver was reportedly intoxicated.

"Careless driving is claiming lives. We need to reduce the number of accidents by observing traffic rules," said Muli.
