On June 28, 2019, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officials made a significant arrest at Burma Market in Nairobi, seizing 800kg of Zebra meat from 15 traders.
The traders were found to be in possession of the Zebra meat, which was allegedly being sold to the public as beef.
A motor vehicle believed to have been used in ferrying the meat was also impounded by the authorities.
According to KWS, the traders were first spotted making away with a Zebra at Portland Farm in Athi River, Machakos, prompting the authorities to start trailing them.
“KWS teams in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies pursued the suspects involved in the poaching incidents,” KWS said in a statement.
The outlet selling the game meat did not have a permit to engage in the business, which is a serious offense in Kenya.
Under Kenyan law, poaching and sale of game meat can attract a jail term of not less than three years.
The suspects will be arraigned in court on Monday, June 1, 2019, to face charges related to the poaching incident.
