Following a public outcry, detectives in Bomet county have made significant progress in tackling the rising cases of car theft in the region. As of June 2019, they had recovered nine out of the 23 vehicles stolen in the last six months.
Three suspects have been arraigned before court in connection with the theft, while another four-member gang is being pursued by the police. The gang is believed to be running a car theft syndicate in the area.
According to county criminal investigation officer Jacob Muli, officers were closing in on the gangsters who had been terrorising motorists since December 2018. He added that three other suspects had already been arrested in connection with the theft and were facing charges in various courts.
County police commander Naomi Ichami has urged locals to be extra vigilant with their vehicles and to install security devices to prevent theft. The car belonging to a county executive member in charge of sports and youth, Bernard Ngeno, was among those stolen.
