The government of Kenya has announced plans to allocate special funds to counties along the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) corridor to improve basic amenities.
According to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani and Devolution counterpart Eugene Wamalwa, the counties along the Lapsset corridor need to be allocated adequate funds to ensure that those implementing projects are secure and their basic needs are catered for.
CS Yatani noted that Lamu County, which has been receiving the least allocation of Sh2.59 billion, needs special funding to spur development. He added that the government will consider allocating funds to improve basic amenities in the county, including roads to enable connectivity.
CS Wamalwa emphasized the need to address the acute shortage of housing and water in Lamu County, which is facing an influx of people due to the Lamu Port project. He said his department will mobilize funds to ensure there are adequate facilities to run the Port of Lamu and other Lapsset projects.
Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha urged the government to consider the increasing population in Lamu as a result of the Lamu Port project, which is straining service delivery with limited resources. He requested water and houses to cater for the growing population.
