On Monday, a suspect linked to murder and robbery incidents escaped from the Mombasa Law Courts after a daring break-out.
Ngalaa Chuphi, alias Hassan Ronald, was being held at the court when he claimed to have a runny stomach and was allowed to use the toilet. However, as he left the toilet, he overpowered the officer waiting for him outside and scaled the perimeter wall.
According to Patrick Mbuvi, an officer from the DCI office who had accompanied the accused to court, the suspect charged at the officer and pushed him to the ground before escaping.
“While at the parking area of the court, the prisoner requested to use the toilet. After relieving himself, he charged at the officer who was waiting for him at the toilet entrance and pushed him to the ground and managed to scale the perimeter wall and escaped,’’ said Mbuvi.
The suspect, who is facing two robbery with violence cases in Mombasa, had been arrested last week in Ujamaa, Likoni, after warrants of arrest were issued for failing to attend court proceedings.
Yesterday, detectives from the DCI office interrogated police officers and court officials at the Mombasa Law Courts to establish how the suspect escaped from lawful custody.
As the manhunt for the suspect continues, it remains unclear if armed officers manning the gates at State House Road heard the gunshots allegedly fired by the officer.
