On May 24, 2021, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) congratulated Chief Justice Martha Koome on her historic appointment as the first female Chief Justice of Kenya.

LSK's Chief Executive Officer, Mercy Wambua, described the appointment as a significant milestone in the country's pursuit of constitutional gender equality.

"This demonstrates the commitment by the Country to ensure the attainment of Kenya's constitutional gender equality and one of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015," Wambua said.

Wambua also expressed LSK's concern over the growing culture of impunity and attacks on judicial officers, assuring Chief Justice Koome of the organization's unwavering support in the fight against such practices.

LSK looks forward to working with Chief Justice Koome to promote judicial independence, constitutionalism, access to justice, and the advancement of the rule of law.

"We are confident that the Chief Justice will prioritize the realization of sustainable administration through completion of the judicial transformation journey, digitization of judicial operations, devolution, and improved infrastructure," Wambua added.
