On May 20, 2021, a shocking incident occurred at Waita GK prison in Mwingi Sub County, Kitui County, where a prison warden was arrested for allegedly shooting his girlfriend and her 1-year-old son.
According to reports, the police were acting on a tip-off from the prison duty officer, who had heard gunshot sounds coming from the wardens' lines earlier that evening.
The duty officer immediately alerted the guard commander, who confirmed that all officers were at their respective watch towers.
However, it was later discovered that David Nduati Kimani, who was supposed to be stationed at watch tower 2, was absent from his duty station.
Kimani had surrendered his G3 rifle to the officers manning the main gate and confessed to having killed someone.
Upon investigation, the police found a female adult and one infant who had been shot dead at Kimani's house.
The victims were identified as Joyce Mwende, aged about 30 years, and her 1-year-old son, Raji.
The motive for the killings is yet to be established.
David Nduati Kimani was arrested while attempting to flee the scene.
Officers at the scene also collected a G3 rifle loaded with a magazine of 11 rounds and 6 spent cartridges.
Joseph Mbunge, the area assistant chief, stated that the warden officer was a drunkard and that the couple had not had any misunderstandings before.
He suspected that Kimani's drunkardness may have led to the killings.
