On March 22, 2021, the Dock Workers Union launched the Pwani Development agenda at Cool breeze Hotel in Mombasa, with General Secretary Simon Sanga explaining key points.
However, elections to pick new Dock Workers Union officials have been cancelled for the third time, following a directive from the registrar of trade unions, E. N. Gicheha.
According to a letter dated May 12, 2021, to General Secretary Simon Sang, the registrar stated that a new board must be constituted to oversee the polls, as the current board, constituted in 2016, cannot conduct the elections.
Over 4,400 unionisable Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) workers in Mombasa, Lamu, Kisumu, Nairobi, Naivasha, and Shimoni were set to cast their votes, but the elections have been postponed amid claims of intensive lobbying by outside forces.
The government has advised the National Executive Committee to call a meeting to constitute the election board, and National chairman Mohamed Sheria has confirmed that there will be no election.
