Published on May 18, 2021, Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Ali Muktar is set to take office as the new Governor of Wajir County. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Wajir County Headquarters.

Muktar will replace Mohamed Abdi Mohamud, who was impeached by the Wajir County Assembly on April 27. The impeachment was confirmed by Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka in a gazette notice, citing gross violation of the Constitution.

The impeachment trial was held by an 11-member Committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okong'o Omogeni. The committee found Mohamud guilty of contravening the County Government Act 2012, the Public Procurement and Disposal Act 2015, and the Public Finance Management Act 2012.

However, the committee absolved Mohamud of abuse of office and Gross Misconduct charges, stating that the MCAs did not provide sufficient evidence. The committee dropped 16 of the 17 allegations against Mohamud and recommended his removal.

On May 17, 25 Senators voted in favour of the motion, while two were against it and four abstained. Mohamud was impeached on April 27, after 37 MCAs voted in favour of his ouster, while 10 opposed.
