On May 17, 2021, the Siaya County Assembly made history by passing the County's Co-operative Development Fund Bill, 2019.

The Bill, which was tabled by Ukwala ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Peter Oduor, Chairperson of the Trade, Industry and Co-operative Committee, aims to establish a development fund to support the co-operative sub-sector in the county.

The fund will provide low-interest loans to co-operatives, promoting the welfare and economic standards of residents.

According to Oduor, the idea behind the Bill was to create a revolving fund from which cooperative societies can obtain affordable loans to lend members at low interest rates.

The Bill also seeks to attract and facilitate investments in co-operative organizations that benefit persons with disability, youth, and women groups.

Additionally, the Bill aims to provide funds to revive and initiate co-operative sub-sector organizations in areas with immediate impact on household economies.
