On May 15, 2021, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski made history by equaling Gerd Muller's 49-year-old German league goal record. He achieved this feat by scoring a 26th-minute penalty in their 2-2 draw at Freiburg, taking his season tally to 40 goals.

With this achievement, Lewandowski is now second on the all-time scorers list in the Bundesliga, with 276 goals, behind only Mueller's 365. He has one more chance to break Mueller's 1971/72 record in their final game of the season against Augsburg.

The German Football League (DFL) hailed Lewandowski's achievement as "historic," saying, "Almost half a century after the unique Gerd Mueller set the record, Robert Lewandowski equalled it today. Congratulations for this outstanding and historic performance." Take a survey
