On Saturday, May 15, 2021, WhatsApp's new privacy policy update came into effect, mandating the sharing of user data with parent company Facebook. The update sparked concerns in Russia, where the country's legislation is being contradicted.

According to Alexandr Khinshteyn, the head of the Russian lower house's information policy committee, the committee will discuss measures with Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor in response to WhatsApp's policy update.

Khinshteyn stated, 'I believe that WhatsApp's policy update contradicts Russia's legislature.' He added that the committee will discuss with Roskomnadzor 'what might be the response from Russia and what the official assessment would be.'

The lawmaker emphasized that sharing personal data with third parties without the owner's consent is inadmissible. He noted that limiting the app's operations in Russia is 'technically possible,' but a broader discussion is needed to make a decision on a point of substance.

WhatsApp announced the new policy in early 2021, initially providing the suspension of accounts for those who would not accept the new terms. Following concerns raised by users, WhatsApp delayed adopting the new policy from February to May.
