Police Officer Arrested Over Death of Nairobi Matatu Tout ¶
On Saturday, May 15, 2021, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrested a policeman based at Dabel Police Station in Moyale over the death of a Nairobi matatu tout.
The police officer, Edwin Oscar Okimaru, was being treated as the main suspect in the murder of Joshua Mungai. Homicide detectives had conducted forensics and investigations for nearly one month before placing Okimaru at the scene of the crime.
According to the DCI, on April 18, at around 10 pm, Mungai and two other friends were apprehended for reportedly violating curfew orders. The trio was allegedly assaulted before being bundled into the trunk of a private car.
Investigations revealed that the victims were driven to Tuala bridge area and dumped. One of the trio, however, freed himself and rescued his friends. They were able to escape after a boda boda rider helped them.
However, they couldn't assist the deceased to a hospital, for fear of coming across the officer and his ally who had assaulted them, the DCI narrated.
The agency added that they were pursuing other leads and would arrest more suspects. The DCI headquarters is located along Kiambu Road.
