Heavy drinking has become a common habit for many, with both men and women enjoying the relaxation and sociability associated with it.

However, this habit can lead to serious problems, including increased health and accident risks, and damage to relationships.

A woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, has shared her story of struggling with heavy drinking, and the challenges she faces in cutting down.

She explains that she and her husband have developed a habit of drinking early in the evening, and often continue throughout the night, without even realizing it.

'We keep saying we'll cut down, especially as when we've been drinking, even the simplest disagreement can turn into quite a nasty fight,' she says.

She wants to quit, but finds it difficult to change her habits.

Chris, a health expert, offers some advice on how to manage heavy drinking, suggesting that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be a helpful tool.

CBT can help individuals to reduce their intake to a safer level and keep it there, by identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours.

However, Chris notes that this approach may not work for everyone, especially those who are already dependent on alcohol.

He recommends that individuals try to abstain for a short period, then re-introduce alcohol and evaluate its effects, before deciding whether to continue with CBT or seek other help.

Ultimately, the key to managing heavy drinking is to address the problem early, before it becomes acute.
