On May 10, 2021, the Nigerian government approved new measures to combat the spread of Covid-19, including the reintroduction of a curfew and restrictions on gatherings.
The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on Covid-19, led by Mukhtar Mohammed, announced the new measures in a statement.
Effective from May 11, 2021, a midnight to 4 am curfew will be reimposed across the country, and other restrictions will be revived to prevent the spread of deadly Covid-19 variants from India and Brazil.
The closure of event centers and non-essential public places, such as nightclubs, has been approved until further notice.
Additionally, gatherings of religious groups have been reduced to 50% attendance, and official engagements, meetings, and conferences should continue to be held virtually.
For schools, which are currently in session, the use of approved antigen-based rapid diagnostics tests will continue as recommended by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control.
Recreational venues, gyms, and indoor sports facilities will close until June 11, 2021, when the situation will be reviewed. However, non-contact outdoor sports like golf, polo, and tennis are not affected.
