On Tuesday, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Jane Marriott, announced the launch of a programme to support media freedom and the media environment in Kenya. The programme, dubbed PROJECT, aims to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to operate.

The programme will focus on supporting the media sector in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, with a particular emphasis on data journalism. It will provide grants to journalists to support the production of data journalism stories, as well as training and mentorship programmes.

Speaking at a Press Club meeting hosted by the Kenya Editors' Guild, Marriott noted that the programme may be extended to other parts of Kenya after the trial period. The programme has already been operating since January, with a range of initiatives including data journalism training, safety and protection training for female journalists, and a mentorship programme.

Additionally, the programme has published a Monitoring Report on violations and attacks against media practitioners. The report highlights the importance of protecting journalists and promoting a safe media environment.
